Portland filmmaker Matt McCormick launches the trailer for Some Days are Better than Others

Shot primarily in Portland and the surrounding areas, Some Days are Better than Others is a poetic, character-driven independent feature film starring James Mercer, Carrie Brownstein, Renee Roman Nose, and David Wodehouse. A charmingly melancholy look at abandonment, Some Days are Better Than Others asks the question, “Why do the good times slip by so fast while the sad times seem so sticky?” The film thematically explores heartbreak, abandonment, and alternative forms of communication while observing an interweaving web of awkward characters who seem to get kicked down by life time and time again. Above all else, Some Days are Better Than Others is a quirky black comedy about the disposable relics of our always-consuming society. It’s a film about growing up, growing old, and holding on to hope while looking for second chances.

THE GLAD HEARTS - The Oak and the Acorn

With a sound that touches upon both alt-country and artful indie-rock, GLAD HEARTS have crafted an album that wouldn’t seem out of place on the CD shelves of fans of NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL or Cassadaga-era BRIGHT EYES.

The band delivers fragile, summery folk hymns that quiver with equal parts indie rock sensitivity and dusty, booksmart poetry. Simultaneously, singer-songwriter Ryan Bing dumpster dives through the darkest moments of life – both his and others – and lays out his findings for all to see. However, what he's mining for isn't cheap tragedy, but hope.

Lending their talents to the album is a veritable who's-who of indie engineers, producers and mixers, such as Grammy Award winner Matt Shane (FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS), Chris Moore (TV ON THE RADIO, YEAH YEAH YEAHS, SCARLETT JOHANSSON), Michael White (TALKING HEADS, DAVID BYRNE, DAVID BOWIE) and John Schmersal (ENON, BRANIAC). Adding to the nuance of the songs is a grab bag of instruments that includes guitar, mandolin, bass, keys, drums, piano, organ, banjo, accordion, saw, drums, trumpet and bottles. The result is a communal back-porch party for the inner English major in all of us. The Oak and the Acorn is something quiet, seemingly plaintive and intensely personal, yet ultimately joyful and something to be shared, over fine china, paper plates or marshmallows on a stick.

The band has been making waves throughout its home region and is poised to break out on a national level by combining heartfelt and honest songwriting, an earnest DIY work ethic and a serious case of wanderlust. GLAD HEARTS' house tour lasts from last week until the end of time

new video by Loquat ("SF's Best Indie Act" -SF Bay Guardian)

Loquat is among SF's most critically lauded local bands, recognized for their singular ability to combine beauty and innovation. "Lots of bands mix electronic and acoustic instruments," says the SF Chronicle, "but few pull it off with the grace—or even the shimmering melodies—exhibited by this San Francisco group fronted by Kylee Swenson." Nylon magazine says, "In a genre marred by overproduction and, sometimes, a lack of imagination, Loquat is not only wonderfully organic but refreshingly inventive."

Loquat's second full length album, Secrets of the Sea, has been on numerous influential blogs' lists of favorite albums, and is available on iTunes, Amazon and the Talking House Store.
