Paste Magazine Gets To Know PEASANT with front-page feature & interview!

“Getting To Know” Peasant is a humbling yet adventurous journey that we should all take a minute to do. And that’s exactly what Paste Magazine sought out to do a few short weeks ago in Peasant’s hometown of Doylestown, PA. Quickly diving into Peasant’s past, present, and exciting new future, Paste Magazine’s Catherine Prewitt sat down with Damien DeRose (a.k.a. Peasant) in order to gain some true insight and new perspective what exactly it is that has inspired the man behind the music to make such a unique and intriguing sound.

With a bit of a sneak preview into what to expect from Peasant’s 2010 album release of “Shady Retreat”, Paste digs up several other

Portland filmmaker Matt McCormick launches the trailer for Some Days are Better than Others

Shot primarily in Portland and the surrounding areas, Some Days are Better than Others is a poetic, character-driven independent feature film starring James Mercer, Carrie Brownstein, Renee Roman Nose, and David Wodehouse. A charmingly melancholy look at abandonment, Some Days are Better Than Others asks the question, “Why do the good times slip by so fast while the sad times seem so sticky?” The film thematically explores heartbreak, abandonment, and alternative forms of communication while observing an interweaving web of awkward characters who seem to get kicked down by life time and time again. Above all else, Some Days are Better Than Others is a quirky black comedy about the disposable relics of our always-consuming society. It’s a film about growing up, growing old, and holding on to hope while looking for second chances.

THE GLAD HEARTS - The Oak and the Acorn

With a sound that touches upon both alt-country and artful indie-rock, GLAD HEARTS have crafted an album that wouldn’t seem out of place on the CD shelves of fans of NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL or Cassadaga-era BRIGHT EYES.

The band delivers fragile, summery folk hymns that quiver with equal parts indie rock sensitivity and dusty, booksmart poetry. Simultaneously, singer-songwriter Ryan Bing dumpster dives through the darkest moments of life – both his and others – and lays out his findings for all to see. However, what he's mining for isn't cheap tragedy, but hope.

Lending their talents to the album is a veritable who's-who of indie engineers, producers and mixers, such as Grammy Award winner Matt Shane (FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS), Chris Moore (TV ON THE RADIO, YEAH YEAH YEAHS, SCARLETT JOHANSSON), Michael White (TALKING HEADS, DAVID BYRNE, DAVID BOWIE) and John Schmersal (ENON, BRANIAC). Adding to the nuance of the songs is a grab bag of instruments that includes guitar, mandolin, bass, keys, drums, piano, organ, banjo, accordion, saw, drums, trumpet and bottles. The result is a communal back-porch party for the inner English major in all of us. The Oak and the Acorn is something quiet, seemingly plaintive and intensely personal, yet ultimately joyful and something to be shared, over fine china, paper plates or marshmallows on a stick.

The band has been making waves throughout its home region and is poised to break out on a national level by combining heartfelt and honest songwriting, an earnest DIY work ethic and a serious case of wanderlust. GLAD HEARTS' house tour lasts from last week until the end of time

new video by Loquat ("SF's Best Indie Act" -SF Bay Guardian)

Loquat is among SF's most critically lauded local bands, recognized for their singular ability to combine beauty and innovation. "Lots of bands mix electronic and acoustic instruments," says the SF Chronicle, "but few pull it off with the grace—or even the shimmering melodies—exhibited by this San Francisco group fronted by Kylee Swenson." Nylon magazine says, "In a genre marred by overproduction and, sometimes, a lack of imagination, Loquat is not only wonderfully organic but refreshingly inventive."

Loquat's second full length album, Secrets of the Sea, has been on numerous influential blogs' lists of favorite albums, and is available on iTunes, Amazon and the Talking House Store.

ÓLAFUR ARNALDS TO RELEASE 'FOUND SONGS' ON ERASED TAPES + 'LJÓSIÐ' VIDEO

In April 2009, Iceland's neo-classical export Ólafur Arnalds created the 7-song series 'Found Songs' - recording a song a day for 7 days and instantly making each track available via Twitter. With artwork contributions from fans via Flickr, this modern release awakens memories of a tradition that seemed lost in the digital age we live in. Ólafur's 'Found Songs' will now see a proper North American release on cinematic pop label Erased Tapes on November 10.

Born in 1987, Ólafur hails from the suburban Icelandic town, Mosfellsbær, just a few kilometers outside of Reykjavík. He has immersed himself completely in a world of delicate symphonic compositions generating near weightless orchestral pieces. Arnalds explores the crossover from classical to pop by mixing chamber strings and piano with discreet electronics which makes him a perfect fit for Erased Tapes. His motivations are clear: "The classical scene is kind of closed to people who haven't been studying music all their lives. I would like to bring my classical influence to the people who don't usually listen to this kind of music...open people's minds."

This young artist is steadily gaining recognition worldwide since his 2007 debut 'Eulogy for Evolution'. The 2008 follow-up EP 'Variations of Static' earned Ólafur acclaim from both the contemporary and classical field - transcending a traditional divide by uniting their ideals. After filling London's world-famous Barbican Hall, fellow Icelanders Sigur Rós

Mystery of Two - Early Talking Heads Meets Sonic Youth

Thursday, September 17, 2009

At a time when music descended from “punk” and “new wave” has been reducedto it’s most rudimentary and lo-fi elements, Mystery of Two continues to pursue the original artistic aspirations of the genre---believing that art and music can be unfamiliar and challenging, without sacrificing accessibility. Much like their musical touchstones—The Feelies, The Voidoids, Talking Heads, and Pere Ubu—Mystery of Two follow the axiom that the unconventional can be created through paramount musicianship, attention to song-craft, and sonic structuring.

Their self-titled follow up to 2006’s Arrows are all you know

CATHERINE FEENY ANNOUNCES TOUR, PRE-RELEASE SALE OF NEW LP ON HER SITE

PORTLAND, OREGON, SEPTEMBER 15, 2009: Catherine Feeny is embarking on an 18-date tour--her first since relocating to Portland from her former base in Norwich, Norfolk, UK—and has just announced the availability of an exclusive pre-release version of her upcoming album, “People In The Hole”, via her site, www.catherinefeeny.com. Aside from being able to purchase the album in advance directly from Feeny’s site, fans can hear a sneak peak of five streaming songs from the full-length.

Although she is American-born (she grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia in a house where George Washington once slept), Feeny began garnering popular and critical acclaim in the UK early in her career with the 2003 release of her eponymous full-length debut. In 2006, as Feeny split her time between the UK and Los Angeles and was signed to EMI, her stateside following continued to grow. There, in 2006, LA-based tastemaker Nic Harcourt played her on Morning Becomes Eclectic, his KCRW radio show, and her song “Mr. Blue” off that year’s “Hurricane Glass” LP was featured in the film “Running With Scissors”. That same track reached the A-list at Britain’s most listened-to radio station, BBC Radio 2

EMANUEL AND THE FEAR Garners New Fans In Rock Luminaries - David Byrne, TV on The Radio and Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson from Joe¹s Pub performance

Tuesday, September 15, 2009

“Just another night in NYC” doesn’t quite cut it for the surreal happenings of Friday, September 4th, 2009 during Emanuel and the Fear’s performance at Joe’s Pub. What was expected to be a fairly quiet night for Emanuel and the Fear with so many people leaving the city for the weekend quickly turned into a sold-out room with everyone from David Byrne to TV On The Radio and Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson in attendance. To top it all off, David Byrne even mentioned the show in his journal! Check it out here: http://journal.davidbyrne.com/2009/09/090509-ny-bike-share-coming.html

And now we can all collectively celebrate the grandeur memory of this thanks to our new friends at NYC Taper. While recording 11 people on stage definitely has its challenges, NYC Taper recorded the whole set from the upstairs soundboard area. Emanuel and the Fear will also be playing NYC Taper’s CMJ show at Bruar Falls on Thursday October 22. Check out NYC Taper’s coverage and recording here: http://www.nyctaper.com/?p=1639

THE CITY AND SKYWAY

The members of the Enid, OK, rock band’s former lineups comprise a veritable who's who of seminal ’00s rock, including DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL, THE PROMISE RING, LIFETIME, HEY MERCEDES, LIMBECK and MARITIME, among others. As you know by now, oft-hyped musical “super groups” rarely live up to the hype or songwriting acumen of their members' original bands. But THE CITY AND SKYWAY prove with their self-released debut full-length Everything Looks Worse In Black & White that - nepotism be damned - they're determined to err on the side of overachievement.

Cursive Live on Luxury Wafers

Tim Kasher and co. recently dropped by Chessvolt Studios for a Luxury Wafers Live Session and did what they do best...be Cursive. After 14 years and 8 records, they still know how to rock. Click on over and give it a listen!

The Luxury Wafers Live Sessions is an ongoing series in which artists are hand-selected to record a handful of “live” tracks in an intimate studio setting. The songs are recorded, mixed, and mastered for your listening pleasure, many of which will be available shortly via iTunes. Adding to the experience, Luxury Wafers also accompanies the tracks with a professionally edited video of the session.

Swedish italo-disco artist Sally Shapiro is excited to release a brand new video for the first single, "Miracle," off her sophomore release, My Guilty Pleasure, out now on Paper Bag Records!

A little bit about the making of "Miracle" according to Sally and her producer Johan Agebjörn, "This music video is directed by Will Joines, whom we had the pleasure to shortly meet during our one and only (and short) DJ tour to North America. He photographed us during the appearance in New York and was really nice. We like his work so we had him to direct this music video together with the producer Gilana Lobel and a few more people."

Video: Alice In Chains "Check My Brain"

"Check My Brain" is the second song to be released off of the forthcoming "Black Gives Way To Blue". It's a punchy mid-tempo rocker that highlights the rock-steady rhythm section of drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Inez. Once again, William DuVall manages to harmonize well with Jerry Cantrell, giving vocal depth to the track. It's a strong song and a good follow-up to first single, "A Looking In View".

"A Tribute to Grace Jones" by Magnum 38 on Tigerbass

During Magnum 38’s visit in Tokyo this year in January, in his usual manner, he woke up drunken and fond himself under the table in any Karaoke Bar in Shibuya. Somebody punched him in his side and gave him another Vodka. He couldn´t believe who he saw: The legendary Miss Grace Jones ! After some more Vodka he asked in his naive and charming way, if she would be up to a collaboration, if he is allowed to tribute his next EP to her. She just said: „Sweety, do everything you want“, and tried to push him to leave the bar to head the hotel.“
Break!

Magnum 38 is the unpredictable guy on Shitkatapult/Music and now on Tigerbass. After he played guitar in some independent bands he started his electronic producer career with glitchy breakbeat tracks. Now he surprises us with a tribute to disco legend Grace Jones. He has always been a fan of her dark and androgynous voice, of her as a person in general. Before thousands of Michael Jackson Remixes will be spread all over the world, listen to his hurray to her: “A Tribute to Grace Jones”.

Darrin James Band Reveals "The Lovely Ugly Truth" October 6

Much is known about the way music impacts the brain; very little is known about its effect on the heart. That instant, visceral sensation when a song connects is universal; while sincerity and authenticity are intangible qualities, they are always present in the positive listening experience. Darrin James has been a guitarist for 15 years and a songwriter for just under a decade, drawing on his love for blues, soul, country and other roots genres to create songs with a timeless quality.  “As a songwriter, I have wanted to combine honest, dark lyrics with old school blues and a fusion of styles, to express the emotions and stories of tragic or flawed characters.” Darrin has succeeded mightily at this aim. His debut album; Thrones of Gold earned a wealth of kudos in the music press. The Deli Magazine had this to say, “The man’s got Joe Henry versatility, a crackerjack studio band and a great sense of craft…from a Lovett/Waits blues into a John Prine diatribe then rocketing off with an Elvis Costello pop gem.” The title track placed in American Songwriter’s Lyric Writing Contest with the lyrics appearing in the Nov/Dec 2006 issue. “Crazy World” was used in the segment of Emmy-nominated reality TV fave The Deadliest Catch in which the crew demonstrate advanced cases of “Bering Sea Dementia”.

THE NEW COLLISIONS

In just over six months, Boston's The New Collisions have gone from an unknown club band to one of the northeast's hottest acts. Fresh off a national tour with The B-52s and Blondie, they are gearing up for the release of their debut EP, “Invisible Embraces,” on November 17.  Greg Hawkes, the legendary keyboard player from The Cars, happened to catch one of the band's first shows. Over the spring, he worked with the band and with platinum-selling producer Anthony Resta (Duran Duran, Missing Persons), another early fan. Influences from the New Wave explosion of '77-'83, plus the early 60s of Phil Spector and Brian Wilson, meet a modern, dancey, intense sound. There are powerful female vocals,  jagged analog synth, sweeping harmonies, catchy dance rhythms, and a message of lost youth in a world falling apart.

Suddenly a three-month-old band was selling out large clubs in Boston. The first tracks garnered full pages in The Boston Globe, The Boston Phoenix, and The Boston Herald, and wild praise from every blog tuned in to the local scene.  It wasn't long before the phone rang, with an offer to go on tour this summer: The B-52s had chosen The New Collisions as their support act. Soon another offer came: Blondie--the band's number one influence--asked The New Collisions to be direct support at an upcoming show.

The Notwist with The Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra, London 12th Dec

After a series of celebrated shows in Hamburg, Amsterdam, Munich and Cologne, The Notwist and The Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra will be playing at the Union Chapel in London on the 12th December.
This combination of a 20-piece orchestra with a 5-piece band from Bavaria holds a lot more promise than the typical "Rock meets Classical" set up. Instead, old and new Notwist songs are elaborated upon to form extremely complex orchestral arrangements that are sometimes moody and often happily insane.
The Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra make music in their very own galaxy - a similar one to which Raymond Scott, Sun Ra or Bach and Beethoven must have once passed by.
These evenings celebrate a new interpretation and elaboration of the Notwistian songbook, which due to the obvious logistical reasons involved can only take place on a few very special occasions.
Last year, The Notwist released their album "The Devil, You and Me" on City Slang, for which the The Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra, conducted by Daniel Glatzel, contributed important orchestral arrangements. The Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra released their first album "Take Off" in May, on Notwist's own label, Alien Transistor. Over the last two years the Munich based documentary filmmaker, Jörg Adolph, filmed the coming together of these two ensembles on stage and off. The DVD of the film "Music, No Music" will be available in stores from December, right on time for the tour.
Support comes from The Sleeping Years: http://www.myspace.com/thesleepingyears

ARMS (Harlem Shakes) "Kids Aflame" mp3

It's the title track "Kids Aflame" off their upcoming US debut, played on ukulele no less! ARMS is essentially Todd Goldstein, guitarist for Brooklyn group the Harlem Shakes. It started out as a lo-fi bedroom project a few years back, but there was such a great response to this album that it's quickly turned into a full-on touring band. Previously only on import, Kids Aflame will now get a proper US release with bonus tracks on Gigantic Music (The Walkmen, Harlem Shakes).

new music from London's STRICKEN CITY

Thursday, September 10, 2009

When Iain Pettifer (guitars) and Rebekah Raa (vocals/keys) first met in maths class they were wearing exactly the same clothes and quickly coupled over a mutual appreciation of introverted, romantic guitar music; not to mention a palpable sense of detachment from the cool kids. Rebekah spent her entire student loan on a guitar and 8 track recorder while Iain educated her with his extensive music collection including of a full set of Twisted Nerve 7”s and the complete works of Richard Hell. Soon joined by Kit Godfrey (drums) and Mike Hyland (bass), our heroes holed themselves up for hours on end, making and breaking songs about life and loss, love and desperation, hatred and hunger.

YACHT bring their light, dark ways to Noisemakers on Noisevox with John Norris

YACHT bring their light, dark ways to Noisemakers on Noisevox with John Norris - make one of our lights go POP and perform a secret show! Don't fret, we filmed it for ya!

New York, NY (September 10, 2009) NOISEVOX – Maybe it was something we said. Or, more likely, something they said. Less than five minutes into John Norris’s interview with this week’s Noisemakers on Noisevox guests, the Portland-by-way-of-Marfa-Texas duo YACHT, one of our lights blew. Not just at any point, mind you, but at the exact moment in the conversation when YACHT”s Jona Bechtolt began to discuss the Marfa Lights – the spooky unexplained phenomenon that occurs nightly near the small west Texas town – and how they became the inspiration for the band’s acclaimed new album See Mystery Lights.
“Whoa. Stuff like this has been happening a lot lately,” says Bechtolt, “every time we start to talk about lights, something happens. It’s really weird.”

That’s kind of how it goes in the weirdly fascinating world of YACHT’s Captain Bechtolt and his first mate, Claire Evans, who traffic in mantras (the new album began as a collection of them), question materialism, heaven and hell, and distribute pamphlets explaining their ever-present use of triangles – all topics they touch on in the latest Noisemakers. As is the need to assure people that they are not a cult – and that their “Team YACHT” community is an inclusive bunch where all are welcome. “We say in our mission statement that YACHT is whatever YACHT is when YACHT is standing before you,” says Evans. “So if there is someone who’s just jumped on stage and started dancing, then, they’re in YACHT.” For all her spiritual musings, Evans also reveals a more down-to-earth chapter from her pre-YACHT days: as a youth, she ran the world’s second most-trafficked Weezer fan site.

iTunes in Love with The Lovemakers;
featured on both
WHAT'S HOT and NEW AND NOTEWORTHY

“See What I Wanna See” open rehearsal live video

Oakland dance-rockers The Lovemakers released a new advance single “See What I Wanna See” on iTunes today, ahead of their forthcoming album, Let’s Be Friends (produced by Talking House and The Lovemakers). On this anthemic track, Lisa Light makes her priorities known, interbreeding groovacious Lily Allen urban-pop with Joan Jett-like “I Love Rock ‘n Roll” glory. Play it loud!

iTunes has fallen in love with The Lovemakers -- the single's featured both on iTunes' "WHAT'S HOT" and "NEW AND NOTEWORTHY" lists.

Meanwhile, on July 15, The Lovemakers stopped by the gallery at Talking House for an open rehearsal with fans to premiere songs from the upcoming album. Lisa Light and Scott Blonde, joined by new bandmates Cary LaScala (drums) and Gareth Lloyd (keys), ran through a blistering set of new material. Catch the performance of “See What I Wanna See” here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-ML6c9Iv0o

Early reviews of Let’s Be Friends are starting to come in, with Synthesis proclaiming “bass, guitar and drums dashed with synth complement the singers’ interplay for a rollicking sound reminiscent of the B-52s.” The album drops September 8 on iTunes and nationally September 15.

Star & Micey... Memphis swirled-out soulful folk pop!

Star & Micey’s self-titled debut album is slated for release on October 20, 2009. The album features a revolving door of fantastic musicians including Luther Dickinson (The Black Crowes, North Mississippi Allstars), Jody Stephens (Big Star) and Rick Steff (Cat Power, Lucero), just to name a few. However, when the sun sets, it is Josh Cosby, Geoff Smith, and Nick Redmond that work relentlessly night after night while remaining poor. Hopefully, the music they make can transcend material possessions, and exhibit something that is always tangible between these three troubadours; that thing is love.

Her raging, fast forward in real time Beethoven's Guitar Shred is like nothing that has come before. A classical/metal lovers everywhere wakeup call, these mini-musicals for guitar, violin and machete could very well blow your mind." - Prairie Miller, NewsBlaze

SIDECHAINS 2 New Remixes & Summer mixtape

First one is a revision of the 90's classic "Blue Pearl-Naked in the Rain" for Big Life Recordings. It has the 90's feeling and sound but with some new elements.

Second one is the "Booty Luv - Shine" Rmx for Ministry of Sound. It's has a French vibe with a beautiful arpeggio, that gives a different point of view to this mainstream single.

Also check out the Sidechains Summer Classics mixtape for Palms Out Sounds. A collection of Summer Classics of House, Techno, Bootlegs, Breaks, 90's...

Release News

TELEKINESIS 'Telekinesis!' - 10th August (Morr Music)
http://www.myspace.com/telekinesismusic
Perfect timing this one what with the sunshine... this is the self-titled debut album from new Seattle band Telekinesis! Produced/mixed by Death Cab For Cutie guitarist Chris Walla, it's a real summery power pop record, recalling of course Death Cab, with a little bit Brendan Benson, a little bit Pavement. Quite simply a record of engaging and charming top-notch songwriting that goes to show simplicity really is the key. The band were one of the talked about acts at this year's SXSW (indeed Spin magazine included in their top 10 Ones to Watch http://www.spin.com/articles/sxsw-09-pick-telekinesis) and already causing a real stir across the water;

"With fuzzed-out guitars, hyperactive rhythms and sun-kissed vocals masking a serious melancholic streak, Telekinesis is classic ’70s-style power-pop, as played by a child of modern indie-rock. Infectious tracks that owe as much to Sloan and Teenage Fanclub as they do Big Star and The Raspberries" ROLLING STONE

MÚM 'Sing Along To Songs You Don't Know' - 24th August (Morr Music)
http://www.myspace.com/mumtheband
Two years after the release of their last album, eccentric pop maestros Múm are set to return with their fifth album proper, simply named ‘Sing Along To Songs You Don't Know’. It’s more laid back than the band's most recent outings, more relaxed and quietly sad, often recalling sand running through fingers or ripples on a lake, but as usual, the songs are brimming with unusual sounds; this time many revolve around a lightly prepared piano, hammered dulcimer, a string quartet, marimbas, guitars, ukuleles and, in the background if you listen closely, you’ll be able to hear Örvar's parent's parakeet singing with the piano! A really beautifuil listen, and overall pretty positive sounding despite being hatched during Iceland's recent political turmoils...

Oh and the band are also about to hit the UK for a bunch special preview shows in July/August...

Will Dailey

Will Dailey is digitally releasing EPs every three months, all thematic collections of songs he’s recently written. The first, Fashion Of Distraction, was largely written under the influence of the sounds of the '60s and early '70s, particularly The Byrds, so it's fitting that Roger McGuinn guests as a guitarist/vocalist on "Peace of Mind," a song whose lyrics are very much rooted in 21st century topical concerns and timeless emotional introspection. The second EP, By the Blue Hills, is a collection of songs saluting Boston and Will’s musical family there, featuring cameos from Boston luminaries and Dailey friends Kay Hanley (Letters to Cleo), Tanya Donelly (Belly, Throwing Muses), Elliott Easton (The Cars), Tim Brennan (Dropkick Murphys) and local fixtures Duke Levine and Sean Staples. These two EPs are now being paired as a physical album, Torrent, Volumes 1 & 2, complete with bonus tracks and presented in CODE, a high-resolution audio standard pioneered by T Bone Burnett.

Chet to Release fourth LP "Chelsea Silver, Please Come Home" Out September 15th

Chet to Release fourth LP "Chelsea Silver, Please Come Home" Out September 15th On Absolutely Kosher Records/Band to Tour this Fall “Chet delivered a dreamy pastiche of pop, country, and blue-eyed soul, all sung by a man seemingly channelling the ghost of Edith Piaf. …It’s clear that Beattie’s time with Frog Eyes has changed his style. Indeed, he has turned his voice into a wild, unpredictable instrument capable of both lump-in-the-throat-inducing gorgeousness and disorienting oddity.” -- Straight.com “Benignant with the lonesome grace of Ryan Beattie's wavering falsetto, the waltz of each lingering instrument glided somniferous between spacial voids and rustling time signatures. With its downhearted will and pristine glare, Chet fostered the melancholy of an on setting island winter, after summer tourism had met its demise.”-- Noripcord.com “This is a songwriter with a stunning capacity to elaborate on his surroundings, seeing situations that may be glanced over by others as rare moments of beauty.
