SUPER 400 To Release The Highly Anticipated "Sweet Fist" September 15th!

Troy, NY. September 8, 2009 – Super 400 is gearing up to release their fifth studio album, Sweet Fist, out September 15th, 2009 on Response Records/Rock Ridge Music. Recorded on tape at the famed Ardent Studios in Memphis, TN, with cover art by Klaus Voormann, the renowned creator of the Beatles' 'Revolver' album cover, this album is the band's most skillful work to date, holding strong to their influences from legends like Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Blind Faith and Zeppelin.

Super 400 takes the classic 'power trio' approach: three instruments taking up the sonic space of an airplane hangar, rocking to the heavens - but their vocal dynamics and spiritual synergy cause the sounds to swell to the bursting point. In the band's first year, Geoff Travis of Trade 2 Records brought them over to London, and they were signed by Island Records. Island planned to herald the return of Rock and Roll with Super 400 as a flagship force in the new millennium. The young band had their first album in the chamber, ready to take on the world. In a twist of fate that would foreshadow an unstable music biz, Polygram Co was soon bought out, folding the hierarchy at Island, but this didn’t break the bands bond, only made them stronger.

When asked where the title “Sweet Fist” originated from, bassist Lori Friday says, "The sweet fist is a beautiful moment in imagination, a sincere effort, strength in kindness, truth in a message, this family's assemblage of love and warmth through sound. Recording the record in Memphis allowed us to absorb the grit and fever of the town - the album title revealed itself through the adventures we had there and is a adjective for the sounds we will share with fans."

One of the standout tracks on the album is “Flashlight,” which up on MySpace Now. The band will be releasing a video shortly about a teenage girl dreaming of being a rock star like her hero Lori Friday. Consistently denied by the stiffness of her parents, she sneaks out with her friends, who alert her with flashlights in the night, and journey to the Super 400 show where she connects with her she-ro while rocking out.

“Sweet Fist” is proof that Super 400 have lasting power within the industry. It's been five records, three vans, thirteen years, and thousands of miles since that first day in Troy, NY and the band will continue to rock until the end of time.

Peasant is Damien DeRose, 23-year-old poet turned artiste, from fabled and beautiful Bucks County, PA. The sleepy hometown and its surroundings, melded with trials and tribulations, to inspire Peasant's confessional and straightforward style of music. In and out of the bedroom studio throughout high school, DeRose helped form a small scene in Bucks County by doling out frisky live performances and DIY records. After high school, he traveled solo on several tours of the US and Europe before signing with Paper Garden Records in 2008 and releasing "On The Ground."

From the whispered, homemade tracks of Fear Not Distant Lover (‘05), to the more polished On the Ground (’09), Peasant’s music has evolved from release to release while maintaining a sensibility and honesty. In 2009, "On The Ground" gained distribution through Team Love, as well as having several songs placed on network TV. In addition, Peasant's music video for “We’re Good” was featured on Stereogum.com, MTVU, and Fuse.TV. Peasant had several tours throughout 2008 and 2009, playing shows as well as recording a series of sessions for Daytrotter, WOXY, and LaundroMatinee, eventually leading to opportunities to share the stage with such high-profile acts as Cursive, Delta Spirit, and Deer Tick among others.

Peasant is going back to his roots for his upcoming album, “Shady Retreat” - recording and engineering the tracks on his own in a converted springhouse studio in the woods. It is a creative step forward for an artist who admires self-produced records from The Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" to Nick Drake’s whispered 8 track sessions. With similar passion for all things human, DeRose creates lush, yet still simple music for “Shady Retreat”, a record he has worked his whole career to produce and one that is bound to exude the beauty of music that comes without pretense, and exists purely, because it does. “The End” is the first single and an excellent lead in to the record.

With a sound that touches upon both alt-country and artful indie-rock, GLAD HEARTS have crafted an album that wouldn’t seem out of place on the CD shelves of fans of NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL or Cassadaga-era BRIGHT EYES.

The band delivers fragile, summery folk hymns that quiver with equal parts indie rock sensitivity and dusty, booksmart poetry. Simultaneously, singer-songwriter Ryan Bing dumpster dives through the darkest moments of life – both his and others – and lays out his findings for all to see. However, what he's mining for isn't cheap tragedy, but hope.

Lending their talents to the album is a veritable who's-who of indie engineers, producers and mixers, such as Grammy Award winner Matt Shane (FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS), Chris Moore (TV ON THE RADIO, YEAH YEAH YEAHS, SCARLETT JOHANSSON), Michael White (TALKING HEADS, DAVID BYRNE, DAVID BOWIE) and John Schmersal (ENON, BRANIAC). Adding to the nuance of the songs is a grab bag of instruments that includes guitar, mandolin, bass, keys, drums, piano, organ, banjo, accordion, saw, drums, trumpet and bottles. Peter Hook and Section 25 join forces to play a special one-off gig in celebration of blue plaques being unveiled on two seminal recording studios in Rochdale; Tractor Sound Studios (which John Peel helped fund with his Dandelion record label after having lived in Rochdale and working in the Townhead Cotton Mill in 1959) and Kenion Street Music Building (Cargo & Suit 16 studios) where Joy Division and The Stones Roses recorded. Hookie only played Rochdale once, in 1980, despite recording there for years so we've been told to expect some Joy Division numbers too! In support, live music from local acts Safety Pins, Tin Griffin, Rhythms of Rochdale and DJ sets from Clint Boon, Martin Coogan (Mock Turtles) and John Robb (Goldblade).

During the day the plaques will be unveiled with Peter Hook, OMD’s Andy McCluskey, members of Autechre, The Inspiral Carpets’s Clint Boon, journalist Mick Middles, Mock Turtles singer Martin Coogan, journalist and Goldblade/Membranes singer John Robb and Dave Fielding of The Chameleons in attendance. There will also be a big screen message from Sheila Ravenscroft and John Peel’s family, plus footage of the myriad bands that recorded in the town.

Invada – the label run by Portishead’s Geoff Barrow – stages a one-day takeover of Bristol’s newly re-launched Colston Hall. In Barrow’s own words: “The lunatics are taking over the asylum…. There’s going to be lots of amazing noise and interesting things to stare at,” says Barrow, who promises to make the event “like a mini festival.”. It's the climax of a full week of events celebrating the £20m relaunch of the 142-year-old foyer.

Mogwai have been announced as headliners, with further sets from label friends Fuck Buttons and Italian giants Zu and Zun Zun Egui. Representing Invada are Malakai, Joe Volk, Team Brick, Rosie Red Rash, Fuzz Against Junk, Gonga and Thought Forms plus a very special, one-off collaboration between neo-prog heroes Crippled Black Phoenix and Bristol string section The Emerald Ensemble with arrangements by Ben Salisbury and Elizabeth Purnell.

In addition to the live performances there’ll be a high visual element to proceedings with special projections for the main hall acts by AV artist John Minton. The arty aspects will centre around a specially commissioned exhibition presented by Friend & Co, the Bristol-based underground art gallery and creative platform founded by Barrow and Tom Friend.

ÓLAFUR ARNALDS TO RELEASE 'FOUND SONGS' ON ERASED TAPES + 'LJÓSIÐ' VIDEO

In April 2009, Iceland's neo-classical export Ólafur Arnalds created the 7-song series 'Found Songs' - recording a song a day for 7 days and instantly making each track available via Twitter. With artwork contributions from fans via Flickr, this modern release awakens memories of a tradition that seemed lost in the digital age we live in. Ólafur's 'Found Songs' will now see a proper North American release on cinematic pop label Erased Tapes on November 10.

Born in 1987, Ólafur hails from the suburban Icelandic town, Mosfellsbær, just a few kilometers outside of Reykjavík. He has immersed himself completely in a world of delicate symphonic compositions generating near weightless orchestral pieces. Arnalds explores the crossover from classical to pop by mixing chamber strings and piano with discreet electronics which makes him a perfect fit for Erased Tapes. His motivations are clear: "The classical scene is kind of closed to people who haven't been studying music all their lives. I would like to bring my classical influence to the people who don't usually listen to this kind of music...open people's minds."

This young artist is steadily gaining recognition worldwide since his 2007 debut 'Eulogy for Evolution'. The 2008 follow-up EP 'Variations of Static' earned Ólafur acclaim from both the contemporary and classical field - transcending a traditional divide by uniting their ideals. After filling London's world-famous Barbican Hall, fellow Icelanders Sigur Rós invited Ólafur to open their most recent European shows, playing to an audience of over 5,000 per night.

So far more than 100.000 people downloaded the 'Found Songs' series via foundsongs.erasedtapes.com. Each track inspired a wealth of artwork from his fans - submitted via Flickr. Hosting this project on their official website, Erased Tapes Records watched the collaboration between Arnalds and his online audience flourish and found it fitting to combine the music and artwork into one complete work. A re-mastered physical and limited edition will now be released in as a CD, 10" Vinyl and high-quality Download.

But 'Found Songs' hasn't just inspired 2-D work. Esteban Diácono - a young motion graphic artist from Buenos Aires, Argentina - created an astonishing animation video for 'Ljósið', which found its way into the hearts of over 400,000 people within 2 weeks via Vimeo and YouTube.

Mystery of Two - Early Talking Heads Meets Sonic Youth

At a time when music descended from “punk” and “new wave” has been reducedto it’s most rudimentary and lo-fi elements, Mystery of Two continues to pursue the original artistic aspirations of the genre---believing that art and music can be unfamiliar and challenging, without sacrificing accessibility. Much like their musical touchstones—The Feelies, The Voidoids, Talking Heads, and Pere Ubu—Mystery of Two follow the axiom that the unconventional can be created through paramount musicianship, attention to song-craft, and sonic structuring.

Their self-titled follow up to 2006’s Arrows are all you know, finds Mystery of Two further traversing the boundaries of experimental pop, and no where is this more evident than in the masterful guitar playing of singer/guitarist Ryan Weitzel. Channeling Robert Quine (Voidoids) and Richard Lloyd (Television), Weitzel creates songs that convey a sense of urgency and immediacy, which at times evolve into turbulences reminiscent of Dinosaur Jr. Vocally, Weitzel has been described as a baritone fusion of David Byrne and Nick Cave, which masterfully accompanies the dark sound-scapes and lyrical content created by the band. PORTLAND, OREGON, SEPTEMBER 15, 2009: Catherine Feeny is embarking on an 18-date tour--her first since relocating to Portland from her former base in Norwich, Norfolk, UK—and has just announced the availability of an exclusive pre-release version of her upcoming album, “People In The Hole”, via her site, www.catherinefeeny.com. Aside from being able to purchase the album in advance directly from Feeny’s site, fans can hear a sneak peak of five streaming songs from the full-length.

Although she is American-born (she grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia in a house where George Washington once slept), Feeny began garnering popular and critical acclaim in the UK early in her career with the 2003 release of her eponymous full-length debut. In 2006, as Feeny split her time between the UK and Los Angeles and was signed to EMI, her stateside following continued to grow. There, in 2006, LA-based tastemaker Nic Harcourt played her on Morning Becomes Eclectic, his KCRW radio show, and her song “Mr. Blue” off that year’s “Hurricane Glass” LP was featured in the film “Running With Scissors”. That same track reached the A-list at Britain’s most listened-to radio station, BBC Radio 2, and Feeny toured the British Isles extensively both headlining and in support of artists such as Martha Wainwright, Kelly Jones (The Stereophonics), Suzanne Vega and The Indigo Girls.

After a corporate takeover at EMI, Feeny became a dropped-artist casualty and returned to the ‘States in 2008. Back in her home country, Feeny embarked on a two-month house show tour of America, playing exclusively in peoples’ homes to intimate audiences, taking refuge in her hosts’ living spaces at night, and reveling in the joy of the open road. Now based in Portland, Oregon, Feeny is excited to undertake her first club tour since returning from the UK.

The members of the Enid, OK, rock band’s former lineups comprise a veritable who's who of seminal ’00s rock, including DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL, THE PROMISE RING, LIFETIME, HEY MERCEDES, LIMBECK and MARITIME, among others. As you know by now, oft-hyped musical “super groups” rarely live up to the hype or songwriting acumen of their members' original bands. But THE CITY AND SKYWAY prove with their self-released debut full-length Everything Looks Worse In Black & White that - nepotism be damned - they're determined to err on the side of overachievement.

The album, a rollicking indie-rock romp filled with melodic Easter eggs, is equal parts brains, beauty and brawn, its dizzying melodic gloss propped up with muscular riffage and smart and imaginative song structures. November 17th marks the return of Malmo, Sweden's Fredrik with their new albumTrilogi.

Fredrik started out in late 2006 as the songwriter/sound artist duo of Fredrik and Lindefelt. The idea was to attempt narrative structures in music through the combination of electroacoustic
composition and folk-infused musical form. Before the release of their critically acclaimed debut, Na Na Ni, the lineup was expanded to a 6-piece. On stage the sextet could be seen playing banjo, clarinet, cello, wind up music boxes and hand made instruments along side bass, guitars and drums. The band ventured stateside for a buzz worthy 3-week winter tour, starting with a live
national television appearance on election night, from the Embassy of Sweden, to a string of packed shows along the northeast. The following 6 months saw Fredrik back in Malmö recording new material in the form of an EP-trilogy. Each one was surreptitiously self-released on highly limited 3" CDs in hand made origami packaging. Having finished a short film collaboration with Dutch film maker Iris Piers and several music videos, Fredrik and Kora present the release of
the EP’s as a proper full length entitled Trilogi, out on November17th.

This second outing is more consistently inward-looking and takes on themes like social realities and subconscious geography. The melodies are more serpentine and the textures decidedly darker. However, Fredrik's warm, sensitive lead voice and operatic choir work still lends the material the same comforting elegance as on the debut. The three EP's bear the titles "Holm", "Ava" and "Ner", all fictional names roughly signifying "Frozen Forest Island", "Water Through Sound" and "The Inside Underground". Together they represent a trilogy of contemporized viewpoints of the Lovecraftian dream passage - orientation at great cost and understanding at the risk of sanity.

"Check My Brain" is the second song to be released off of the forthcoming "Black Gives Way To Blue". It's a punchy mid-tempo rocker that highlights the rock-steady rhythm section of drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Inez. Once again, William DuVall manages to harmonize well with Jerry Cantrell, giving vocal depth to the track. It's a strong song and a good follow-up to first single, "A Looking In View".

As I stated in my review for "A Looking In View", the band is well aware of the void left by original vocalist Layne Staley, and to their credit they are not trying to replace Layne. They are moving forward as a band, playing off of the strengths that each member brings to the group. They've retained the trademark AIC sound and yet managed to build upon the foundation.

Royal Native

Royal Native is the work of folk and blues singer/guitarist Glass Williams and electro music producer Cornelius R. Pennington Esq. Here they unite the twin disciplines of yelling in a high pitched voice and sitting in chairs.

Let’s imagine that you were brewing poison deep within the forest, near that shack that the fat kid, Ronny, would always shove you in when you were 7. Then mother had to come save you and all the other boys would laugh at you and call you names. Remember that shack? Sure, I can see from that look of painful remembrance in your eyes that you know the place.

So back to that poison. Well let’s suppose that instead of the usual fetid mixture of Sunny D and water, you pumped in Folk psychedelia, peppered it with Electronic Disco Funk, and added a shot of Rock.

Musically, Royal Native is like a cauldron full of suspicious neon fluids.

Neon Indian Tour the World & The Traditionist on Daytrotter!

On his way up to Northern California to officiate his sister’s wedding after being ordained for the event, The Traditionist aka Joey Barro stopped in San Francisco to lay down some tracks for Daytrotter. The outcome is four beautiful tracks, two of which can be found on their debut album Season to Season, the other two will appear on the follow up record to be released in early 2010. The upcoming release will be back from the studio in the next couple of weeks where it is currently being mixed by producer Scott Solter (John Vanderslice, Pattern Is Movement) and features drummer Jon Wurster of Superchunk and Mountain Goats.

After some more Vodka he asked in his naive and charming way, if she would be up to a collaboration, if he is allowed to tribute his next EP to her. She just said: „Sweety, do everything you want“, and tried to push him to leave the bar to head the hotel.“

Darrin James Band Reveals "The Lovely Ugly Truth" October 6

Much is known about the way music impacts the brain; very little is known about its effect on the heart. That instant, visceral sensation when a song connects is universal; while sincerity and authenticity are intangible qualities, they are always present in the positive listening experience. Darrin James has been a guitarist for 15 years and a songwriter for just under a decade, drawing on his love for blues, soul, country and other roots genres to create songs with a timeless quality. “As a songwriter, I have wanted to combine honest, dark lyrics with old school blues and a fusion of styles, to express the emotions and stories of tragic or flawed characters.” Darrin has succeeded mightily at this aim. His debut album; Thrones of Gold earned a wealth of kudos in the music press. The Deli Magazine had this to say, “The man’s got Joe Henry versatility, a crackerjack studio band and a great sense of craft…from a Lovett/Waits blues into a John Prine diatribe then rocketing off with an Elvis Costello pop gem.” The title track placed in American Songwriter’s Lyric Writing Contest with the lyrics appearing in the Nov/Dec 2006 issue. “Crazy World” was used in the segment of Emmy-nominated reality TV fave The Deadliest Catch in which the crew demonstrate advanced cases of “Bering Sea Dementia”.

The Lovely Ugly Truth is the follow up album, and it's filled with parables that illustrate moral dilemmas and regret, outlaw stories, murder ballads and even a contemporary protest song that confronts the immigration debate. “I have always loved the saddest songs the best, so that is what I write most often,” explained James, who produced the album and assembled an ensemble of New York’s finest players, including staff from Antibalas, TV on the Radio, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Beirut and Arcade Fire. The tracks were recorded between 2007 and 2009 in numerous studios in New York by Matt Gill, who has worked with bands like Fischerspooner, Aimee Mann, The Raveonettes and Aqualung.

The album contains no filler, but standout tracks include “Baby Don’t Bitch”, a swampy Tony Joe White-esque burner that tells an outlaw tale with a Bonnie and Clyde theme. Viola was utilized instead of the predictable fiddle, lending dark richness while complimenting blues guitars and soulful backing vocals. “Lovely Ugly Truth” attacks divorce, a classic breakup song that evokes The Band, brilliantly summing up the strife everyone experiences in bad relationships. James chose the name for the album after realizing that great songwriting always illustrates both lovely and ugly truths. Scorching bluesy guitar, percussive piano and a mid-song rave up reflect the incendiary nature of every break up.

“Green Card Rag” rejuvenates a time-honored tradition, the protest song. James addresses the injustices of immigration policy through the story of a struggling migrant worker. With a finger-picked electric guitar and a New Orleans-style horn section, it steps far from the traditional folky presentation, bringing real spirit to the form. “Easier” is a regret-soaked acoustic song that powerfully evokes exhaustion, sadness and helplessness. Written to express man’s struggle with the world, it will resonate with anyone who has suffered in the current economy.

Darrin James Band achieves that resonance we all recognize, when lyrics and music touch our hearts. Sheer talent helps, but a genuine reverence for the art form is the key to transcending the mundane. The Cowboy Trance blogger Flash said it best, “The DJB sound so completely authentic and true to its voice that it feels almost cleansing, and makes you wonder why in the hell great songs like these aren’t everywhere, drowning out the vapid clowns that pollute the genre.”

In just over six months, Boston's The New Collisions have gone from an unknown club band to one of the northeast's hottest acts. Fresh off a national tour with The B-52s and Blondie, they are gearing up for the release of their debut EP, “Invisible Embraces,” on November 17. Greg Hawkes, the legendary keyboard player from The Cars, happened to catch one of the band's first shows. Over the spring, he worked with the band and with platinum-selling producer Anthony Resta (Duran Duran, Missing Persons), another early fan. Influences from the New Wave explosion of '77-'83, plus the early 60s of Phil Spector and Brian Wilson, meet a modern, dancey, intense sound. There are powerful female vocals, jagged analog synth, sweeping harmonies, catchy dance rhythms, and a message of lost youth in a world falling apart.

Suddenly a three-month-old band was selling out large clubs in Boston. The Notwist with The Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra, London 12th Dec

After a series of celebrated shows in Hamburg, Amsterdam, Munich and Cologne, The Notwist and The Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra will be playing at the Union Chapel in London on the 12th December.
This combination of a 20-piece orchestra with a 5-piece band from Bavaria holds a lot more promise than the typical "Rock meets Classical" set up. Instead, old and new Notwist songs are elaborated upon to form extremely complex orchestral arrangements that are sometimes moody and often happily insane.
The Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra make music in their very own galaxy - a similar one to which Raymond Scott, Sun Ra or Bach and Beethoven must have once passed by.
These evenings celebrate a new interpretation and elaboration of the Notwistian songbook, which due to the obvious logistical reasons involved can only take place on a few very special occasions.
Last year, The Notwist released their album "The Devil, You and Me" on City Slang, for which the The Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra, conducted by Daniel Glatzel, contributed important orchestral arrangements. The Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra released their first album "Take Off" in May, on Notwist's own label, Alien Transistor. Over the last two years the Munich based documentary filmmaker, Jörg Adolph, filmed the coming together of these two ensembles on stage and off. The DVD of the film "Music, No Music" will be available in stores from December, right on time for the tour.

60 Watt Kid has crossed into a new dimension with the release of their latest album We Come From the Bright Side. The band has reinvented itself once again and fully embraced its unique "intergalactic pop" flavor with this conceptually cohesive full-length. The self-produced album was mixed by Thom Monahan (Devendra Banhart, Entrance Band, Vetiver and Lavender Diamond) to bring out its asymmetrical guitar riffs, swirling time signatures, and guru tunings that seem to break all rules of musical physics. Chock full of strange, dreamy, pop songs, otherworldly vocals, and layered sonic aberration, the album bends experimental pop on its side—demonstrating how malleable electronics and melodic instruments can be. From its wistful and percolating first song “2012,” the band manages to navigate a core aesthetic of its own design. As the album progresses, it morphs into the ebullient title track, through the explosive 2-minute psych-pop granger "Golden Travels," and into the apocalyptic “Pressure." Then, at the heart of the release is the tender epic, “Take the Pain Out Of Your Chest,” which is as beautiful and penetrating a track as any you’ll hear this year.

While re-locating to the warmer climates of L.A., after leaving behind San Francisco, founding members Kevin Litrow and Derek Thomas found a new dynamic drummer in young Dylan Wood. The 18-year-old wonder kid adds his unorthodox touch of high energy rhythm and tribal flourishes, completing the triangle of this exotic sounding three-piece. The band is presently gaining wide recognition, with rave reviews in Los Angeles from the L.A. Record (SoCal’s premiere source of underground inspiration), URB Magazine, and L.A. Weekly, and recently headlined DIY kingpin Sean Carnage’s four-year anniversary residency.

It’s truly rare to find a band that so effectively and simultaneously hugs the experimental as tightly as it hugs the hooks. Chronicling the recent passing of singer Kevin Litrow’s mother, We Come From The Bright Side takes the listener on a sonic emotional journey. As the album reaches its finale, we find ourselves filled with strange nostalgic longing to know what it is like on the Bright Side.

60 Watt Kid is also releasing a limited pressing split 7” with nationally praised DIY project FOOT VILLAGE (out on Absolutely Kosher September 22nd). The bands’ pulsating, high-energy tracks pair perfectly, and dutifully represent the creative quality coming out of the Los Angeles DIY scene. Foot Village is a thunderous drum-n-shout assembly from L.A. It started out as a lo-fi bedroom project a few years back, but there was such a great response to this album that it's quickly turned into a full-on touring band. Previously only on import, Kids Aflame will now get a proper US release with bonus tracks on Gigantic Music (The Walkmen, Harlem Shakes).

When Iain Pettifer (guitars) and Rebekah Raa (vocals/keys) first met in maths class they were wearing exactly the same clothes and quickly coupled over a mutual appreciation of introverted, romantic guitar music; not to mention a palpable sense of detachment from the cool kids. Rebekah spent her entire student loan on a guitar and 8 track recorder while Iain educated her with his extensive music collection including of a full set of Twisted Nerve 7”s and the complete works of Richard Hell. Soon joined by Kit Godfrey (drums) and Mike Hyland (bass), our heroes holed themselves up for hours on end, making and breaking songs about life and loss, love and desperation, hatred and hunger.

Defined by their clattering guitars, the scattergun pounding of the drums, basslines bursting with hooks and the strikingly voiced melodies of otherworldly front woman Rebekah Raa; SC produce an indie-pop of hitherto untapped gems drawn from influences Talking Heads, Sonic Youth, Young Marble Giants and The Slits as well as those lost sources of alternative melodica Life Without Buildings, The Sundays and Bow Wow Wow. Having recently been invited to tour the UK with Maximo Park, Stricken City last year clocked up playlists at XFM and NME Radio – as well as support from Radio 1 and 6Music. The band makes their US debut this fall including an appearance at CMJ.

New York, NY (September 10, 2009) NOISEVOX – Maybe it was something we said. Or, more likely, something they said. Less than five minutes into John Norris’s interview with this week’s Noisemakers on Noisevox guests, the Portland-by-way-of-Marfa-Texas duo YACHT, one of our lights blew. Not just at any point, mind you, but at the exact moment in the conversation when YACHT”s Jona Bechtolt began to discuss the Marfa Lights – the spooky unexplained phenomenon that occurs nightly near the small west Texas town – and how they became the inspiration for the band’s acclaimed new album See Mystery Lights.
“Whoa. Stuff like this has been happening a lot lately,” says Bechtolt, “every time we start to talk about lights, something happens. It’s really weird.”

That’s kind of how it goes in the weirdly fascinating world of YACHT’s Captain Bechtolt and his first mate, Claire Evans, who traffic in mantras (the new album began as a collection of them), question materialism, heaven and hell, and distribute pamphlets explaining their ever-present use of triangles – all topics they touch on in the latest Noisemakers. As is the need to assure people that they are not a cult – and that their “Team YACHT” community is an inclusive bunch where all are welcome. “We say in our mission statement that YACHT is whatever YACHT is when YACHT is standing before you,” says Evans. “So if there is someone who’s just jumped on stage and started dancing, then, they’re in YACHT.” For all her spiritual musings, Evans also reveals a more down-to-earth chapter from her pre-YACHT days: as a youth, she ran the world’s second most-trafficked Weezer fan site.
Beyond offering something to think about, YACHT deliver the fun as well, in the form of infectious, singalong synth-pop, and a live performance that gets up close and personal with the audience. It’s all on full display in a live performance captured by the Noisevox cameras last weekend, at Glasslands in Brooklyn, New York. Included are YACHT’s indie-summer smash “Psychic City”, upcoming single “The Afterlife”, and the duo’s T-Pain-inspired “I’m in Love With a Ripper”. Finally, speaking of ripping, Bechtolt and Evans have some strong – and somewhat divisive – opinions on music and software piracy as well, ones they’re not afraid to voice.

Star & Micey’s self-titled debut album is slated for release on October 20, 2009. The album features a revolving door of fantastic musicians including Luther Dickinson (The Black Crowes, North Mississippi Allstars), Jody Stephens (Big Star) and Rick Steff (Cat Power, Lucero), just to name a few. However, when the sun sets, it is Josh Cosby, Geoff Smith, and Nick Redmond that work relentlessly night after night while remaining poor. Hopefully, the music they make can transcend material possessions, and exhibit something that is always tangible between these three troubadours; that thing is love.

Spanning two stages, indoor and out, BEMF will be headlined by The Juan Maclean (live) and also feature Young Love, Jupiter One, Shy Child, Home Video, Designer Drugs, The American Dream Team as well as dozens of other DJs and performers. Two years after the release of their last album, eccentric pop maestros Múm are set to return with their fifth album proper, simply named ‘Sing Along To Songs You Don't Know’. It’s more laid back than the band's most recent outings, more relaxed and quietly sad, often recalling sand running through fingers or ripples on a lake, but as usual, the songs are brimming with unusual sounds; this time many revolve around a lightly prepared piano, hammered dulcimer, a string quartet, marimbas, guitars, ukuleles and, in the background if you listen closely, you’ll be able to hear Örvar's parent's parakeet singing with the piano! Will Dailey is digitally releasing EPs every three months, all thematic collections of songs he’s recently written. The first, Fashion Of Distraction, was largely written under the influence of the sounds of the '60s and early '70s, particularly The Byrds, so it's fitting that Roger McGuinn guests as a guitarist/vocalist on "Peace of Mind," a song whose lyrics are very much rooted in 21st century topical concerns and timeless emotional introspection. The second EP, By the Blue Hills, is a collection of songs saluting Boston and Will’s musical family there, featuring cameos from Boston luminaries and Dailey friends Kay Hanley (Letters to Cleo), Tanya Donelly (Belly, Throwing Muses), Elliott Easton (The Cars), Tim Brennan (Dropkick Murphys) and local fixtures Duke Levine and Sean Staples. These two EPs are now being paired as a physical album, Torrent, Volumes 1 & 2, complete with bonus tracks and presented in CODE, a high-resolution audio standard pioneered by T Bone Burnett.
